Constitution Day Commemmoration

September 17th marks the national observance of Constitution Day, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on that day in 1787. Schools in the Kane County School District commemorated Constitution Day in the following ways:

Kanab High School

Mr. Glover (Social Studies Teacher)  has focused on the importance of the Constitution for the whole term.  Students read the Constitution and discussed its importance in our county and discussed the founding fathers.

Kanab Middle School

Mr. Fox led students in lessons aimed at deepening their understanding of the U.S. Constitution.  He provided an interactive class discussion where students explored the historical context and significance of the Constitution.  Students also participated in a Nearpod activity on the Constitution for a more immersive learning experience allowing students to analyze various aspects of the document, including its structure, the role of each branch of government, and important documents.  Mr. Fox also discussed key terms such as “federalism”, “amendments” , and “separation of powers”.  These topics were discussed with all students in the 7th and 8th grade.

Kanab Elementary School

The 5th-grade students have been talking about the Constitution and working on memorizing the Preamble, which helps them earn the Bronze Patriot ward. Students also created a Constitutional Lapbook, which contains fun facts and provides a basic understanding of the Constitution, Articles, and Amendments.  The 5th-grade will also hold an assembly on Veterans Day.

Valley Elementary

Teachers read the “We The Kids” book, which is the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States as a story about three kids and their dog going on a backyard camping trip.  The book’s illustrations and explanations help young readers under the Preamble’s meaning and its relevance to their lives.

Valley High School

Mrs. Esplin (Social Studies Teacher) discussed the importance of registering to vote and helped students who turned 18 by November 4th with the registration process. Students participated in a photo scavenger hunt in Long Valley where local government activities take place and with community members who participate in civic activities.

Students also participated in daily trivia on the announcements during the second hour relating to the Constitution, Bill of Rights, American Founders, and local government. The Constitution was reviewed in class and discussed with students.

I would like to thank all the teachers in the Kane County School District who created curriculum and class activities relating to the Constitution.
