October 1st Count

School districts across Utah submitted their annual October 1st student headcount, establishing the crucial baseline for student enrollment and state funding allocations for the 2026–2027 school year.

According to our estimates, the Kane County School District’s total enrollment across Kindergarten through 12th grade is 1,365 students as of October 1, 2026. The report highlights a continuing downward trend, marking a decrease of 61 students compared to the district’s October 1, 2022, enrollment figures. In the Kane County School District, we have seen the sharpest decline in student population occur within the primary grades, specifically Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

The local drop mirrors a widespread demographic shift affecting public education statewide. Utah has seen a sustained contraction in student enrollment over the past three years, with an estimated overall decrease of 18,339 students across the state during this period.

Demographers and education policy experts attribute the statewide decline to a combination of changing population dynamics and expanding educational options. Key drivers behind the falling numbers include lower fertility rates, smaller annual birth counts, reduced in-migration to the state, and an increase in families utilizing school choice alternatives.

With state funding tied directly to student counts, districts will be evaluating these enrollment figures as they plan future academic programming and staffing needs. In an effort to address budget shortfalls resulting from declining student enrollment in our district, we did not replace 4.5 full-time positions that were vacated by retirements or resignations.  We will continue to address declining student enrollment with attrition in our district.
