At the beginning of each school year, Utah elementary students complete the Acadience Reading
Assessment to establish baseline literacy levels. Historically, Kane County School District students have
scored below the state average on this initial Beginning of Year (BOY) assessment in grades K-3.
To address this challenge, the district partnered with the Kanab City Library Board to promote literacy to
students throughout the summer. Thanks to this initiative and the dedicated parents and guardians who
prioritized summer reading, our students entered this school year with significantly higher BOY reading
scores:
Kindergarten: +15% increase
1st Grade: +3% increase
2nd Grade: +3% increase
3rd Grade: +12% increase
Starting the school year at a higher reading level sets our students up for success throughout the year,
bringing us closer to our district goal of having 80% of 3rd graders reading at or above grade level by the
end of the school year. I want to personally thank the Kanab City Library, the library board, our school
librarians, District Reading Specialist Robin Coleman, and our parents and students for their incredible
support of summer reading.
