October 1st Count

Each year on October 1, school districts across Utah finalize student enrollment counts. These counts are directly tied to the distribution of state and federal funding for both district and charter schools. According to a recent press release from the Utah State Board of Education, public school enrollment statewide declined by 4,873 students compared to the previous year, representing a 0.7 percent decrease.

Over the past 12 years, Utah has experienced a consistent decline in elementary grade enrollment, with the most significant reductions occurring in grades K through 3. Kindergarten alone saw a 3 percent drop in student numbers this year.

Kane County School District reflects this broader statewide trend. Our student population has gradually decreased over the past two years:

  • 2023 to 2024: 1,426 students
  • 2024 to 2025: 1,408 students
  • 2025 to 2026: 1,382 students

This marks a net decrease of 44 students. For historical context, the district’s highest recorded enrollment was in 1959, with 1,546 students.

Despite the overall decline, some grade levels remain strong. The largest cohorts in the district are:

  • Eighth grade at Kanab Middle School: 93 students
  • Fourth grade at Kanab Elementary School: 93 students

As we continue to monitor enrollment trends, Kane County School District remains committed to adapting strategically, supporting every learner, and ensuring that resources are aligned with student needs.
